Biography

I've focused my career on how to commercialize advanced software technologies. I love the rigors of business, the focusing role of the market, the possibilities of visionary leadership, and the excitement of new technologies. I'm drawn to taking raw technologies and finding practical and effective applications that generate profitable businesses. My experience with commercialization of software technology includes work with small startups, mid-sized companies, and Fortune 500 corporations in fields including wireless, customer relationship management, training, middleware and software tools.

I'm committed to running a business with integrity and soul. This means a business that not only makes money, but also tells the truth to our customers and stakeholders, builds a working environment of accomplishment and acknowledgement, and creates a community of people making a difference. As David Whyte suggests, my goal is to "reconcile the left-hand ledger sheet of the soul with the right-hand ledger sheet of the corporate world, a kind of double-entry bookkeeping that can bring together two opposing sides of ourselves normally split by the pressures of work."

JumpStart Wireless Corporation is my current company. It is the first company to deliver mobile business applications that:

• are easy and inexpensive to implement,

• pay for themselves with a few weeks of customer operational savings, and

• allow existing business software companies to wirelessly enable their products in a matter of weeks.

Our unique and proprietary artificial intelligence technology provides our customers fully customized wireless business applications for their mobile field staff without expensive custom programming or complex system integration. JumpStart Wireless does this for one tenth the cost and effort of conventional wireless approaches while delivering savings of $1000s per month per mobile worker.

The JumpStart Wireless breakthrough extends beyond that provided to customers. Our technology allows existing desk-bound business software companies -- ERP, CRM, project management, service management, etc. -- to extend their products out to mobile workers. With a few weeks effort, our partners are deploying full scale, secure wireless applications integrated with their own successful products.

JumpStart Wireless Corporation is the third startup I've founded. Earlier companies delivered software and services to customers like Sun Microsystems, Xerox, American Airlines, United Parcel Service, MCI, Fujitsu, Blue Cross of PA, Baxter Healthcare, NYNEX, and Canada Trust. At IBM I led the team delivering IBM's first commercial version of CORBA and then Application Server technology. Also at IBM, I drove the adoption of Java as a replacement for proprietary IBM tools and was IBM's representative to the Java Beans design team. I was also VP of Development for an HR/Payroll software company and a Helpdesk software company. I was a founding board member of HR-XML, a consortium creating XML standards for the human resources industry.

In the 1980s I was on the Computer Science faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and led the Intelligent Tutoring Systems group at the Learning Research and Development Center. Even as an academic I was focused on the delivery of real-world, practical systems. My systems, for example, were used to train air force recruits in basic electronics and elementary school students in fractions.

I received my Ph.D in Computer and Information Science from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1985 and my BA in Information Science and Biology (with honors) from the University of California Santa Cruz in 1977.

I live in Delray Beach FL (about 1 hour north of Miami) with my wife and our 17 year old son. My 20 year old daughter attends Hampshire College in Amherst Massachusetts.
